The Otis and Gus-Gus Show – 7 Apr 2019

Hello good people, its Gus-Gus back again. This week I get to tell you about the new appliances mom got as her retirement gift. As I mentioned last week she’s retiring from the Air Force this summer and we are super happy. I got dad’s coffee chocolate chip cookie recipe, which mom is working on perfecting as it is slightly different. Oh and I will tell you know all about The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy that me and mom just finished along with letting you know what next months book for the book club is.

New Appliances

So mom got a new oven, microwave, refrigerator, and and dishwasher. Something about the other appliances being decades old.  Dad says because of the house being as old as it is these appliance are not coming out without some serious help.  Mom had to run new outlets for 3 of the appliances and dad had to fix the plumbing for the dishwasher since as dad said, “it was not at all standard.”  The oven and the dishwasher play little tunes when they are done that dad says are the gnomes happily doing their jobs in the kitchen.  Mom says it sounds like fairy tunes, I just know the noise the oven makes means food is done.

Coffee Chocolate Chip cookies

Dad got this out of the Necronomicon Cook Book so that is why mom is still working on perfecting it.

Ingredients – 4 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 2 Cups Butter, 1 1/2 Cups packed Brown Sugar, 1 Tablespoon Coffee, 4 eggs, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and 4 Cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix flour and baking soda and set aside. In a large bowl cream together butter, brown sugar, and ground coffee.  Then stir in the eggs and vanilla.  Slowly add in the flour mixture.  Once it’s all mixed add the chocolate chips (this is my favorite part, mom almost always drops one.)  The you drop them by spoonfuls on to a cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.  You will have to tell me how they are as mom will not let me try them and she said the flour needs to be cut back.  She says I can’t have them because the coffee and chocolate will make me sick.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

I thought this was a very funny book. The part about the president and how he is just a figure head or distraction from something else going on was very funny.  There was a lot of shocking moments especially when we found about the mice.

The Mice

That was just none sense, if anyone is running the Earth through humans it’s us dogs, pretend like I did not say that.  And the ending was another big shocker for mom since she has seen the movie, I thought the ending was very good. Overall the book was a lot of fun and I would recommend it.

Mom says next months book is Anne of Green Gables. Guys I tried to talk her out of it as it sounds girly but she wanted to do something different.  So hopefully we will see you on Star Wars Day, May the Fourth be with you, for out next book club.

Next week if mom is not too exhausted from the Earth day event hopefully I will be able to tell you everything they did.  I’ll also tell you about one of the new recipes mom has started eating, shes trying to figure out if she is allergic to one of the major foods.  Dad says she get no good stuff and he gets it all, I’m good with that if he shares.  And by next week mom should be done reading me The Little Prince and I can tell you all about it. Until next time, laters.

Otis and Gus-Gus Show – 24 March 2019

Hello people, Gus-Gus here again finally. Mom got this new toy called a cricut and she has not been sharing her computer with us. So I had to explain to her the importance of what I was doing here. I’m trying to keep people informed on what we have going on, and we got a lot going on. To start with there is the Book club and what book we chose to go with.  Then there is the changes to the third room of the book store. Oh and the Murder mystery dinners that mom and dad are starting.

The Book Club

Well the book club did not have as many people show up as I had hoped. We had one person so mom and I sat and discussed different books with her.  Then we picked The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Dad says this is classic Sci-fi, I don’t care I’m enjoying mom reading it to me. We are just getting into and it’s very exciting and interesting.  I’m not sure what some of the creatures are, mom says they are just different aliens, I still don’t know what that is. But what they say is still very funny. I’m hoping more people come to the next book club meeting I want to hear what they thought of the book.

The third room of the bookstore

We are moving things around in the house. The couch that has been with us for a very long time and was sitting in the third room of the bookstore has been moved out. Dad says he can now pull out the last of the overstocked books he has on hand.  He also says once the book sale this month is over they are going to change that room into a consignment shop. It will have a lot of moms crafts that she has been working on with that cricut thing.

There will also be some of dad’s re-purposed wood signs. I know there were other things they mentioned but so many people come in the bookstore these days I have trouble listening and greeting people.

Murder Mystery Dinner

Okay so this is super cool.  Mom and dad did a dry run with some close friends to help figure out cost, flow of events, and meal options.  All the people came dressed up and had a character to play with a book that told them things about the character.  There was 4 rounds of food. I know I got some chips from the first round, mom says she is going to change that round.

I did not get any of the green stuff from the second round. But some of the rice from the third round made it to me. And mom dropped some raisin she tried to get to before me but I’m super fast. They was all laughing and having a good time.  Mom says she will start selling tickets on Wednesday for the next one which will be April 13th. I can’t wait to see the new costume’s and the food changes.

Well that’s all the new stuff we got going on here.  Next week I’ll let you know if dad made his goal to sale 1,000 books in March, he is almost to 800 so it’s getting close. I’m also going to get mom’s grapefruit cake recipe. Until next week I hope to see you in the book shop.

100 Days

Well its been 100 Days since we opened the doors as The Tibbetts House: Bed, Breakfast, and Books. On August 2, 2017 we opened the doors with a just over 1,000 books in stock and one functional room, 221 B Baker street. With in two weeks we could no longer pay people for the books they were bringing, we had not planned on books coming in so fast. At three weeks we were finally able to open the West Egg with its newly renovated bath room featuring a comfy whirlpool tub. At the same time we opened The Loop, but it was still light on the decor. During the first month we hosted eight guests and the bookstore was overflowing with books. We had received great initial reviews and Highland as a whole seemed quite happy the the Bed and Breakfast was staying and that a bookstore was in town.

During our second month we started off with our ribbon cutting and open house on September 6th. For four hours we did continuous tours through the house. We hosted four guests during the month and the bookstores profits doubled, but were still in the red. Most of the bookstores success was attributed to a week long sale where the books were half off.  The Tibbetts House had been featured in four news papers and we had put out ads in two others which aided in the bookstores success.

During our third month of operation we hosted seven guests and participated in the local trick or treat trail. We received our first three start review and it include some things we needed to fix and it pushed us to change The Loop from a full size bed to a queen size.  We also learned a valuable lesson in sticking to the the business rules we set.  For one we should not accepted reservations with less than 24 hours notice, this caused us not to check everything out as well as it should have been.  Two, we always do payments when people arrive as breakfast is already bought and usually already partially prepared.  Not doing this made it seem like there was a chance for a discount when breakfast is skipped at last minute.  The feed back was all very useful and we were able to improve things for the future.

During the last 10 days of first 100 days in operation we have expanded into selling games and consigning local authors books in the bookstore. For the games we are specifically focusing on Looney Labs games like Flux, Just Desserts, Pyramid Arcade, and Tree House Pyramids at this time and may expand into other companies later. We want all games we carry to be things that are fun for the whole family to play but also able to be taken any where. The Tibbetts House Co is finishing our first 100 days holding our second sale which is our first annual Veterans Day Sale.
